AD139 - Staithes, North Yorkshire
This much-painted view looks out to sea past the jumble of cottages from Cowbar Lane. Often confused with Whitby, Staithes is a much smaller, quieter village, despite having once been a thriving fishing town with thousands of inhabitants. One claim to fame is that Captain James Cook, the great explorer, served his apprenticeship in a grocer’s shop here, and amongst the hustle and bustle of all the fishing boats, learnt the rudiments of navigation which no doubt inspired him to become a sailor.
