AAD118 - Entrance to Durham Castle
Well known to all who visit the Palace Green and the Cathedral opposite, this gatehouse forms an imposing entrance to Durham Castle. The Castle was once home to the Prince Bishops of Durham, on the site of a fortress built by William the Conqueror in 1072 to defend the borders against Scotland. Since the foundation of Durham University in the 1830’s, Durham Castle has been a residential college to many hundreds of university students.
