| AD117 - Entrance to
Belsay Castle |
| Belsay is a hidden gem amidst the windswept
moors of Northumberland. Its distinctive stone with the iron
‘spots’, quarried from within the grounds, was used
to build the castle and, later, the village and the neo-classical
house. The stone quarry now makes a perfect shelter for rare
and exotic plants. Depicted here is the entrance to the 14th
century tower house. I particularly liked the intricate carving
above the doorway, and the sense of dereliction beyond. |
